A Guide to Manchester
Manchester became a city in 1853, a city most known mostly for its sporting heritage, home to two major football
teams: Manchester United and Manchester City. Manchester was home to the first railway station world-wide; the same
applies to the chemistry industry in which the first atom was split, and technologically, home to the world's first
stored-program computer.
Along with that, Manchester has a celebrated musical heritage, with popular music acts such as the Happy Mondays and
Oasis having formed in Manchester.
The city has many hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions. Some of these include:
John Rylands Library
- A large gothic building has a world class collection of literature, including the oldest known piece of the New Testament, the St John Fragment. The library also has medieval manuscripts and a 1476 version of Canterbury Tales.
Stockport Air Raid Shelters
- Experience what it was like to live during World War 2.
Whitworth Art Gallery
- Whitworth Art Gallery has a large collection of art, ranging from textiles to watercolours.
